frog in the throat. It has been suggested that this term for a hoarse throat has its origins in the medieval practice of insert- ing a live frog into a patient’s mouth head first, so that the frog could draw the patient’s infection into its own body when it in- haled. However, the expression isn’t recorded until the nine- teenth century, which makes such a derivation suspect. Frog was once a common name for thrush, the mouth and throat infection, and this may have something to do with a frog in the throat. |
