Friar’s Club. This theatrical fraternity, founded in 1904, has been headed by such prominent abbots as George M. Cohan, Georgie Jessel, Milton Berle, Joe E. Lewis, and Frank Sinatra. The Friars, based in a clubhouse on East 55th Street in New York City, is noted for its “roasts” of celebrities—facetious trib- utes at a banquet in which the celebrity is both praised and good-naturedly insulted in speeches by friends. |
