The Scandinavian goddess of love Freya was deserted by her husband Odin, or Wotan, god of war, wisdom, agricul- ture, and poetry, because she paid too much attention to a life of luxury and not enough to him. Odin may have forgotten her, but history didn’t, the Old English for her name becoming the basis for our Friday: Fria daeg, or Freya’s day. wednesday is named for Wotan.
