词汇 | bubby bush |
词源 | bubby bush. The strawberry shrub (Calycanthus floridus or glaucus) is possibly named the “bubby bush” because its blos- soms resemble a woman’s breasts, sometimes called “bubbies.” However, according to Thomas Anburey in his Travels Through the Interior Parts of America (1791), the word derives “from a custom that the [American] women have of putting this flower down their bosums . . . till it has lost all its grateful perfume.” The plant is also called the bubby, bubby blossom, bubby flower, bubby shrub, and sweet bubbies. |
