seaweed. Seaweed takes its name from Old English sae, “sea,” and weod, “weed.” It is generally divided into four groups: blue- green, green, brown, and red, with about 10,000 species in all. Kelps growing along the Pacific coast are the largest and most commercially important of the brown seaweeds, many growing to more than 100 feet long and the giant kelp (Macro cystis py- rifera) growing over 150 feet. |
