词汇 | shamus |
词源 | shamus. A word for a private detective that probably came into the language of the underworld from Yiddish, in which a sham- mos is the paid caretaker of a synagogue, just as a shamus is often a paid caretaker of his clients. Partridge, however, believes that the word derives from the Irish name Seamus, because so many Irish immigrants in America became policemen. |
