词汇 | shambles |
词源 | shambles. The Latin scamellum, “little bench,” became scamel in Old English, changing to shamel in Middle English and meaning a butcher’s block. Shamel became shambles, for “a slaughterhouse,” in the 16th century and soon the word was being used to describe any scene of bloody disorder re- sembling a slaughterhouse, though in recent times shambles has come to mean any scene of disorder, not necessarily a bloody one. |
