词源 | she. She for a ship has several explanations, none of them ca- pable of proof. The oldest explanation is that the Romans called all ships she because the Roman goddess of navigation was Minerva. Another theory says the feminine is used because a ship was “as near and dear as one’s wife or mother,” while a third has it that a ship is “as capricious, demanding, and ab- sorbing as a woman.” Perhaps not so incidentally, another ship spotted from the bridge is often referred to as he, this possibly referring to the captain of the other vessel, who is usually a man. |
