词汇 summer soldier and sunshine patriot
词源
summer soldier and sunshine patriot; times that try men’s souls.Thomas Paine’s famous words first appeared in the American Crisis, December 23, 1776: “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine pa- triot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their coun- try; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” Paine was writing of men who supported the Revolution only when things were going well, some of whom served short summer enlistments when soldiering was comfortable. The great sloganeer also coined the expressions the rights of man, the government is best which governs least, the age of reason, and many other stirring phrases. His revolu- tionary book Common Sense is said to have been read on av- erage by one in seven Americans at the time. See united states of america.
