Schick test. While a professor of pediatrics at the University of Vienna in 1913, Dr. Bela Schick devised the famed Schick test, a skin test to determine susceptibility to diphtheria. His test consists of injecting diphtheria toxin into a person’s skin, the skin becoming red and swollen if the person is not im- mune. Dr. Schick, born in Hungary, immigrated to the United States in 1923, becoming a naturalized citizen six years later. A pediatrician for many years at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospi- tal, he did important work on allergies, wrote several books on child care, and helped found the American Academy of Pediat- rics. He died in 1967, aged 90.
