scam. Scam, for “a scheme to swindle, rob, or deceive,” seems to have originated as carnival talk late in the 19th century. Pos- sibly a variant of “scheme,” it may also derive from the British slang scamp, meaning to rob a person on the highway, which dates back to the 18th century, or to the British slang scamp, meaning a cheat or swindler, recorded in the early 19th century and obsolete by about the time scam was born. |
