An old joke has it that the town of Schenectady, New York, was so named after a raiding party of French colo- nials and Iroquois Indians massacred 60 English residents of the town in February 1690. The town’s name, according to the story, comes from an Indian word meaning “skin neck today.” The massacre did occur, but there is no such Indian word and the origin of Schenectady is unknown.
