scallion. Crusaders returning from the Holy Land probably introduced the word scallion to Europe. These small onions were raised in the Palestinian seaport of Ascalon, now just an- cient ruins, and had been named Ascalonia caepa, “Ascalonion onion,” by the Romans. This was shortened to scalonia in the common speech of the Romans and passed into English as scalyon, which finally became scallion. See also onion. |
