Uhyanapatanvaani. In the Karuk indigenous language of the United States this huge word means “little word asker.” It was coined by the Karuk in honor of William Bright (1928– 2006), a renowned linguist, whose dictionaries and other books on American Indian languages, especially the Karuk (sometimes called Karok), helped keep their words and phrases alive. “Little word asker” referred to the many travels Professor Bright made to ask Native speakers the meaning of their words, for which they also made him an honorary mem- ber of the tribe. |
