词汇 | scriptorium |
词源 | scriptorium. The ancient Greeks had commercial scriptori- ums that copied texts for a price and sold texts, but these “pub- lishing houses” were not called scriptoriums. This word from Latin scribere, “to write,” wasn’t recorded until medieval times, when it described a room in a monastery where manuscripts were stored, read, or copied. When the Oxford English Diction- ary was being compiled, its editor, Sir James Murray (1837– 1915), called an iron outbuilding in his Oxford garden the Scriptorium. He used it as a study, and in it were stored mil- lions of reference slips for that great work. |
