词汇 caesar
词源
Caesar; Caesarea; caesarean; Caesarism; Caesarist; Caesarize; Caesaropapism; Render Therefore unto Caesar. More than a score of expressions commemorate Gaius Julius Caesar or his descendants, most of these covered under sepa- rate entries. The great Roman soldier and statesman, whose name is responsible for more words in our language than any other, was probably born in 102 b.c., though the traditional date is two years earlier. After crossing the Rubicon in early 49 b.c., conquering Italy, and defeating Pompey in Greece, Caesar returned to Rome where he became dictator. He was assassi- nated during the Ides of March, on March 15, 44 b.c. Historical estimates of Caesar range from one extreme to the other, but the life of this commanding genius, who in Shakespeare’s words bestrode “the narrow world like a colossus,” is well known to many. His military genius, his address to Rome after he defeat- ed Pharnaces at Zela in 47 b.c., “Veni, vidi, vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered) is folklore in many countries. His fascination for Cleopatra, by whom he had a son Caesarion (later put to death by order of Augustus), is also a familiar story. Most words de- riving from his name reflect Caesar’s great power. Caesaria was an ancient seaport in Israel, the Roman capital of Palestine. Caesarean means pertaining to Caesar or the Caesars. Three other terms, Caesarism (imperialism), Caesarist (imperialist), and Caesarize (imperialize), commemorate the first Caesar’s adopted son and successor, Augustus, referring to the imperial- ist government the first Roman emperor instituted. Caesaropa- pism is the possession of supreme authority over both church and state by one person. Of the many proverbs that recall the great Roman’s name the most famous is probably “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” which is the familiar biblical in- junction from Jesus to the Pharisees.
