词源 | bore for the hollow horn. An expression popular in days past. It was explained in Dialect Notes, v. 5, 1919. “A hole is bored in the horn of a cow (having a hollow horn) with a gim- let. This custom gave rise to the epithet applied to people who behaved foolishly (suggesting a hollow head): ‘He ought to be bored for the hollow horn.’ ” |
