mish-mosh. A confusing mess, a hodgepodge. In The Joys of Yiddish, Leo Rosten reports that Groucho Marx once told a politician, “You’ll never get votes in the Bronx if you go on say- ing mish-mash instead of mish-mosh.” Mish-mash is indeed the most common pronunciation in the U.S., but the O.E.D., trac- ing the word back to 1585, spells it mish-mosh. No one is sure, but the word may come from the German Mischmasch or the Danish misk-mask, both meaning about the same. |
