Missouri is either from the name of a Sioux tribe, “people of the big canoes,” living in the region, or from an Al- gonquian word adapted by the French meaning “muddy water,” in reference to the Missouri River. The Show Me State was ad- mitted to the Union in 1821 as our 24th state, having previously been the Missouri Territory.
