mint. Mint derives from the name of the Greek nymph Mint- he, who was transformed into the herb by Proserpine, the jeal- ous wife of Pluto, god of the underworld. Wild mint (Mentha sativa) has been chewed since earliest times and is often re- garded as an aphrodisiac. Aristotle forbade the chewing of mint by Alexander the Great’s soldiers because he felt it aroused them erotically and sapped their desire to fight. (For a mint where money is made, see money.) |
