minx. Minx has nothing to do with minks, except that a minx may wear a mink. Minx refers to an impudent or saucy, flirta- tious girl or woman. The word may come from Low German minsk, hussy, but some authorities mark its origin unknown. In any case minx has been part of the language since the 16th cen- tury, when it first meant a pet dog. In Othello (1604) Shake- speare used it as we often do today: “Damn her, lewd minx! O, damn her!” |
