bug-eater. A humorous, derisive nickname for a Nebraskan. The name comes either from some Nebraskans’s impoverished appearance in times past, or from parts of the state being over- run by locusts; suggestions were even made at one time to make food of the locusts, one farmer writing a cookbook with the theme “If you can’t beat ’em, eat ’em.” According to Notes and Queries, June 15, 1883: “Several Nebraskan entomologists and journalists actually got up a dinner at which locusts were served in various styles.” |
