build a better mousetrap. Ralph Waldo Emerson is often credited with “If you build a better mousetrap the world will beat a path to your door,” mainly because a book entitled Bor- rowings by Sarah S. B. Yule and Mary Keene, published in 1889, reported that he had said it in a speech. But many scholars be- lieve that Emerson was too wise to believe that the world would always seek out the best, and nothing concerning a mousetrap can be found in any of Emerson’s published writings. |
