Notre Pierre. French workingmen so idolized the Russian anarchist Peter Kropotkin (1842–1921) that they called him Notre Pierre, Our Pierre. The French government, however, im- prisoned him for three years before Clemenceau and others se- cured his pardon. As a young man in Russia, Prince Kropotkin had renounced his title and been imprisoned for two years be- fore escaping. After the revolution, Kropotkin returned to Rus- sia, where a street and a museum are named after him. |
