词汇 | this is a hell of a way to run a railway |
词源 | this is a hell of a way to run a railway. An example (see mutt and jeff) of a cartoon contributing an expression to the language. In this case the common saying describing some- thing in a state of confusion possibly originated in a cartoon published in a 1932 issue of Ballyhoo Magazine. The cartoon shows two trains coming at each other on the same track and about to crash. “This is a hell of a way to run a railway,” a rail- way signalman says. But the expression may date back to the turn of the century, according to the recollections of several word enthusiasts who remember hearing it that far back. |
