词汇 | thistle |
词源 | thistle. The thistle became the heraldic emblem of Scotland in the eighth century or earlier in commemoration of the role it played in an attack by the Danes on Stirling Castle. Barefooted Dane scouts stepped on thistles during that night attack, alarm- ing the Scots and enabling them to defeat the raiders. All this- tles are members of the Compositae, one of the largest families of plants in the world, including among its relatives such fine garden flowers as marigolds, asters, cosmos, dahlias, and chry- santhemums. But thistles are generally thought of as a prickly weed that is little valued. Abraham Lincoln’s lowest estimate of a man was to call him a thistle. The word dates back in English to at least a.d. 752 and its origins are unknown. |
