词汇 schisma
词源
schisma. Today we wouldn’t name even a Fowler anything like “Jacob the Scourge of Grammar,” as Giles Jacob (1686–1744), author of the Lives and Characters of English Poets, was called in his day. Yet the Scourge himself wouldn’t have contradicted German Emperor Sigismund, (1366–1437), who like Caesar considered himself above grammar. This story is told of Sigis- mund in Carlyle’s Frederick the Great: “At the Council of Con- stance, held in 1414, Sigismund used the word schisma as a noun of the feminine gender (illa nefanda schisma). A prig of a cardinal corrected him saying, ‘Schisma, your highness, is neu- ter gender.’ Whereupon the emperor turned on him with ineffa- ble scorn, and said ‘I am king of the Romans, and what is gram- mar to me?’ ”
