This story is told of Sigis- mund in Carlyle’s Frederick the Great: “At the Council of Con- stance, held in 1414, Sigismund used the word schisma as a noun of the feminine gender (illa nefanda schisma). A prig of a cardinal corrected him saying, ‘Schisma, your highness, is neu- ter gender.’ Whereupon the emperor turned on him with ineffa- ble scorn, and said ‘I am king of the Romans, and what is gram- mar to me?’ ”
