词汇 | schmo |
词源 | schmo; shmoo. Though some authorities mark its origins unknown, this word for a stupid, foolish, or boring person, first recorded in about 1945, may be a shortened euphemism for the stronger, obscene Yiddish word shmuck, which can mean either a jerk or a detestable man. The word became popu- lar at about the time cartoonist Al Capp created an egg-shaped, much-abused creature called a shmoo for his comic strip L’il Abner. |
