词源	noble experiment. President Herbert Hoover did not coin the expression noble experiment for Prohibition, nor even re- peat the words. While seeking the presidency in 1928, Hoover answered a question about prohibition in a questionnaire Idaho senator William E. Borah sent to several candidates. What Hoover actually replied in part was: “Our country has deliber- ately undertaken a great social and economic experiment, no- ble in motive and far-reaching in purpose.”
