词汇 | one good turn deed deserves another |
词源 | one good turn (deed) deserves another. Petronius Arbiter (d. ca. a.d. 66) coined or first recorded this expression in his Satyricon, along with such others as beware the dog, not worth his salt, and my heart was in my mouth. In direct opposition to the first saying is the cynical expression no good deed goes un- punished, which sounds modern, probably of recent vintage. |
