词汇 | one to show one to blow |
词源 | one to show, one to blow. Handkerchiefs became uniform in length after Marie Antoinette issued a royal decree declaring that they should be. They then became quite fashionable and men began to wear one in the breast pocket for show, while carrying another in the rear pocket to blow their noses with. This led to the now rare expression one to show, one to blow, im- plying that “all isn’t what it seems, someone has something hid- den in reserve.” |
