Today one-handed shots are the rule in basketball, but in the 1930s controversy raged between those who favored the old-fashioned two-handed stationary “set shot” and the one-hander introduced by San Francisco’s Gali- leo High School star Angelo Enrico “Hank” Luisetti (1916– 2002) in the early years of the decade. The debate was especially lively between fathers whose coaches had taught them to use the set shot and sons who had picked up the Hank Luisetti one- hander on garage and schoolyard courts. As for Luisetti, who went on to star for Stanford University, he said of his history- making shot: “Shooting two-handed, I just couldn’t reach the basket. I was lucky with my coaches in high school and college, I guess, because I made the baskets, they left me alone. . . .” The man who changed basketball forever was elected to the Basket- ball Hall of Fame in 1959.
