one-name star. An expression used in sports for an athlete who is so well known that he is often thought of and called by one name, such as Michael (Michael Jordan), Tiger (Tiger Woods), Ali (Muhammad Ali), Lance (Lance Armstrong), and Pelé (the nickname, meaning “black pearl,” of Brazilian soccer star Edison Arantes do Nascimento). Only rock stars rival ath- letes as one-name stars. The Beatles, for example, were all known by their first names. |
