词源 | steerage. The ancestors of millions of Americans came to America in steerage, which literally was the noisy, crowded sec- tion of a ship below deck. Passage was $10 to $15 for such quar- ters, compared with about $40 for regular tickets. Later, the term came to mean any area on a ship where the passage was cheapest. See ellis island. |
