capsule wisdom. No one has identified the inspired genius who invented small medicine capsules that dissolve in the stomach so that the terrible-tasting stuff inside never touches the tongue. From their shape these capsules seem to have been patterned on plant seeds, pods, or capsules, which take their name from the Latin capsula, a small box or case. The medi- cines were mass-produced by the middle of the 19th century, and the first recorded use of their name is in 1875. The little capsules, a clever idea themselves, became so common that soon after they were compared to anything short and concise, as in capsule wisdom, “a wise, pithy saying.” |
