词汇 capitol
词源
capitol. A building in which a state legislature meets, or, when capitalized, the building where the U.S. Congress meets. The name comes from ancient Rome’s Capitoline hill, on the summit of which was erected the great temple of the city’s guardian, Jupiter Optimas Maximus. In a.d. 340 the Capitol was saved from the Gauls when the sacred geese kept there awakened its defenders, who repulsed a night attack. The U.S. Capitol building has 365 steps, one for each day of the year. In 1835 Richard Laurence, a deranged house painter, tried to assassinate President Andrew Jackson in the Capitol rotunda, unsuccessfully when both of his pistols failed to fire. See jacksonian democracy.
