词汇 | gonzo |
词源 | gonzo. Hunter S. Thompson (1937–2005) introduced this word, meaning wild, eccentric, out of control, in a Rolling Stone article (November 11, 1971) that he later expanded into his fa- mous book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. There are several suggestions for the word’s origin, including the Italian gonzo, simpleton. But author Rich Cohen writes in the New York Times Book Review (April 17, 2005) that Thompson told him a few months before he died that “It’s a Portuguese word. It means weird, off the wall, Hell’s Angels would say. Out there. Gonzo, learning to fly as you’re falling.” However, another of Thomp- son’s editors, the late Bill Cardoso, is given full credit for the word’s invention in 1968 by the Oxford English Dictionary. |
