词汇 | gone with the wind |
词源 | gone with the wind. Margaret Mitchell’s immensely popu- lar novel Gone With the Wind (1936) made this expression popular in our time, but the title comes from English poet Er- nest Dowson’s love poem “Non Sum Qualis Eram” written in 1896 and containing the line “I have forgot much, Cynara, gone with the wind.” Mitchell’s novel about the Civil War won a Pulitzer Prize, and in 1939 the film version won the Acade- my Award for best picture. Dowson also wrote “Vitae Summa Brevis,” which gave the language the beautiful line, “They are not long, the days of wine and roses: / out of a misty dream / Our path emerges for a while, then closes / Within a dream.” |
