Big Willie. Another weapon named after a real person, in this case the first tank to be used in warfare. Officially called the Mark I, the behemoth was invented by Sir William Tritton (1875–1946) and popularly named Big Willie in his honor. Trit- ton was knighted for his invention in 1917, but his tank, first pressed into action a year before on the Somme battlefield, had very little effect on the outcome of World War I. It did, however, mark the beginning of a new kind of land warfare. It is often forgotten that Major W. G. Wilson jointly invented Big Willie with Tritton. See big bertha.
