B.O. Plenty; Bathless Groggins. These are the names of comic strip characters who rarely washed, if ever, and whose names became synonymous for anyone who pays no attention to bodily cleanliness. B.O. Plenty, his prenom influenced by b. o. above, was a character in cartoonist Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy comic strip in the 1940s; he eventually married Gravel Gerty, who looked as bad as he did. Bathless Groggins, always scratching himself, appeared in his own, earlier strip. |
