nerd. The storyteller-artist Dr. Seuss (the pen name of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel) apparently invented the word nerd in his children’s book If I Ran the Zoo (1950): “And then, just to show them, I’ll sail to Ka-Troo And Bring Back an It-Kutch a Preep and a Proo a Nerkle a Nerd and a Seersucker, too!” The nerd is pictured by Dr. Seuss as a thin, cross, humanoid crea- ture. His word and illustration were picked up by small kids and within 10 years became a term for a socially inept, though often intelligent, person. |
