because it’s there. The humorous or wry answer of a moun- tain climber who is asked why he chose to climb a certain mountain. The phrase is often attributed to Sir Edmund Hil- lary, who climbed Mt. Everest with his guide Tenzing Norgay in 1953, but it was said many years before then by British climber George Leigh Mallory (1886–1924) when asked why he wanted to climb Everest. It is also applied to people other than climbers, meaning generally “a foolish reason for any foolish act.” |
