Battle Above the Clouds. A poetic name for the Civil War battle of Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga, Tennessee, on November 25, 1863. The battle was so called because the heavy clouds below the summit obscured the fighting going on above. By the next morning the Stars and Stripes was flying at the summit, and by the end of the day the Union had won Chatta- nooga. Both sides lost about 10 percent of their large forces. |
