Gilbert and Sullivan; Gilbertian. These two terms are used to describe light-hearted, fanciful wit similar to that of the many comic operas by Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836– 1911) and Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842–1900). Notable examples are The Mikado (1885), The Pirates of Penzance (1879), and H.M.S. Pinafore (1878). Gilbert, the librettist, and Sullivan, the composer, collaborated for 25 years before a quar- rel ended a perfect partnership peerlessly combining social sat- ire with grand opera. Sullivan is also known as the author of many songs and hymns, including “Onward, Christian Sol- diers.” Gilbert died a hero’s death, of heart failure, while trying to save a drowning girl. He was 75 years old at the time. |
