ghetto. Ghettos are now generally areas in which racial mi- norities are forced to live through economic necessity, though the word has been applied loosely to areas where higher-income groups live as well, even in such terms as middle-class ghetto. But originally a ghetto was an area where Jews in western Eu- rope were cruelly forced to live by law. The practice dates much earlier, but the word derives from the Venetian Jewish quarter in Italy. |
