词汇 | entertain |
词源 | entertain. The word’s meaning “to hold the attention of, to divert, amuse” reflects its Latin origins, from Latin inter and te- nere, to hold. Possibly the most embarrassing modern-day ty- pographical error came in 1915 when an unknown Washington Post editor or typesetter somehow dropped tain from the word ‘entertaining.’ In the resulting news story it was noted that President Wilson had taken his fiancée Edith Galt to the theater the previous night and, rather than watching the play, “spent most of his time ‘entering’ [instead of ‘entertaining’] Mrs. Galt.” This error forced the publisher to destroy that day’s entire edi- tion of the Post.
