词汇 burlesque
词源
burlesque. The American burlesque in which stripteasers performed owes something to traditional burlesque, which is comedy employing satire or caricature (the word burlesque in fact deriving from the Italian burla, ridicule). But burlesque derived more directly from the minstrel show and variety theater. American burlesque, rarely produced today, featured often raunchy dialect and slapstick comedians, song and dance acts, and scantily dressed chorus girls as well as bump- and-grind strippers. It operated in circuits distinct from vaudeville after the turn of the 20th century, mainly in the Columbia and Empire Circuits, and grew more daring until police raids inspired by laws proposed by New York mayor La Guardia led to the closing of the famed Minsky burlesque houses and others during the Great Depression. The best- known and most artistic stripper of the golden era was Gypsy Rose Lee (born Rose Louise Hovick), who began her show business career as a child song-and-dance act and wrote mys- tery novels after her burlesque days ended. Fanny Brice, Bob- by Clark, Phil Silvers, and Abbott and Costello were among the many great talents who worked in burlesque. See ecdysicst; vaudeville.
