Pliny writes: “When our ears do glow and tingle, some do talk of us in our absence.” This super- stition probably goes back before the ancient Romans and is re- corded early in English, Shakespeare writing of “fire in mine ears.” To have itching ears, “to enjoy hearing gossip,” is perhaps even older, the words recorded in the Bible (2 Tim. 3:3). |
