词汇 odyssey
词源
odyssey. Any long, pioneering voyage or journey filled with adventures, usually to many places and peoples. It is so named after Homer’s Odyssey, the epic poem that takes his Greek hero, Odysseus, on 10 years of wandering before he comes home to Ithaca. Odysseus’s Latin name is Ulysses. Among his many ad- ventures he fought bravely in the Trojan War and conceived the immortal scheme of the trojan horse. James Joyce said the theme of the Odyssey was “greater, more human than Hamlet, Don Quixote, Dante, [and] Faust” and based his great novel Ul- ysses upon it. See homeric laughter.
