The longshoreman, who helps load and un- load ships, takes his name from a contraction of “along-shore- man,” while the synonym stevedore is from the Spanish estibod- or, “one who packs things.” A shenango is a specialized long- shoreman, one who handles cargo on railroad barges. His name derives from the county of Chenango in upstate New York, from which many such workers were once recruited.
